Mario Lopez, Ragtime and Rude Children

Published by sagnanc2 at 12:07 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Hey!! What’s shakin’ bacon????

Ok…I have seen him everywhere! Mario Lopez has been in every entertainment magazine from People to TV Guide. His People picture spread was particularly lovely!! This man has an IMPECCABLE body! Brown hair…brown eyes…amazing teeth…dimples…GEEZ!! But enough about his exterior. His interview was very interesting in that he is a very well spoken young man and seems to be a genuinely nice guy. I am not all about a guys body, however, he obviously takes pride in his shape and works a great deal to maintain his physique. I admire that kind of determination and dedication. If you get the chance pick up this weeks People and check out his picture and interview.

On my way home from work I had the pleasure of hearing several songs from the Broadway Musical “Ragtime”. A great comment on the time period when ragtime music was new and became popular. Serious subjects such as race and prejudice were addressed eloquently and with careful research and feeling. The show was nominated for 12  Tony Awards in 1998, being edged out of receiving the Best Musical award by Disney’s The Lion King. The CD is a great cast recording. If you buy it only for Audra McDonald it is a treasure, however, Brian Stokes Mitchell as Coalhouse has a voice that can reach angels. Put these two together with the rest of a stellar cast and you have one amazing CD cast recording.

Most of you know I teach a Musical Theatre Workshop for our park district. I generally have had a great time teaching this. The children are between the ages of 9-13 and are GREAT! I related well to this age of kids and I believe they respond pretty well to me. So, it came as a huge surprise to me when  I strated this session to find one child that I cannot even begin to relate to. She is from another country. She has a very good command of the english Language…more so than some kids I know who were born here. However, she is rude. VERY rude. I have never encountered a 12 year old child who is as rude as this one…and not only that, but she is intentionally rude. She KNOWS she is being rude. She KNOWS what she is saying is inappropriate, yet she continues to do it. I have tried to be patient (Yup! I am trying). I have tried to be kind. I have tried not to let it show that this child just rubs me the wrong way…In short I have been FAIR. Tonight she stepped over the line and personally insulted me in front of all the children. The other children were appalled, as I was too. She knew she was rude. This got me wondering…why is she always so rude? Does her family just think she’s funny? Do they ignore her rudeness? Cover it up? I am a firm believer that if children are rude and do not have manners taught to them when they ARE children they will grow up to be rude adults.

I also think that children are 99.9% a product of their environment…

Would like to “see” her environment….

Thanks for reading! Have a GGGRRREEEAAATTT day!

Says the rude child:  “No, I won’t do it.”  Says the courteous grown-up:  “Yes, I won’t do it.”  ~Mignon McLaughlin, The Neurotic’s Notebook, 1960
